Daka's right, it's just pure luck. And certain classes hardly ever seem to find spellbooks.

By the way, my character died on D:50 yesterday. First time that has ever happened to me.

Oh well, that's ADOM for you. I've got another really nice randomly generated character going at the moment, though: a candle-born grey elven wizard. So far it's looking pretty good, which means I'll probably screw up soon.

Edit: By the way, how about a few screenshots of the more exciting and colourful areas in the game (as opposed to screenshots which are all from the very beginning of the game)? Like the Casino or Dwarftown or a vault? Or even one of the elemental temples, perhaps - unless you think that would be too much of a spoiler...

Good idea, I'll look out for any vaults/interesting places in my next game.  BTW, any advice on taking screenshots?  Just print screen -> Paint -> chop off the parts of the image that aren't to do with ADOM?

Best bet I find is Irfanview, and I tend to use PS or something to optimise for web, but you can leave that bit to an admin or updater you send them to. There's a sticky about screenies, or maybe a post in the content submission guidelines, in the announcements forum.

Edit: Now I've got a lovely screenshot of a promising character being slaughtered by that bloody Assassin Prince. Sort of a What Not To Do screenshot.

Oooo, I hate it when that sort of thing happens, my incredibly promising Trollish Healer (born under the candle sign ) was just aged about 30 years, making him incredibly old, he was then turned into a shadow as he was totally defenseless with pathetic strength and toughness

Yes, that's one of the few disadvantages about trolls. But otherwise they'd just be too powerful.

My character just got crowned with Death's Blade. Dang, I was hoping for Sun's Messenger. Oh well, but at least I got fire immunity, so as soon as I find some dragon slaying ammunition and a ring of ice I'll head over to the Tower of Eternal Flames.

It's getting worse and worse: I've just been to the dwarven graveyard and got very badly drained by an emperor lich. And the contents of that grave weren't even worth it. So now I'll have to train them all up again before I can do the ToEF.
Oh well. On the bright side, though, I managed to pickpocket a ring of ice from a zombie.
