I believe in an attempt to get "the last word," he fired me today.
I just walked in, and he asked me if I was "going to help him out or not?" I replied that I was there to work for him and do whatever he needed to be done. After he didn't respond, I said, "Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question..."
To which he replied, "You just don't get it. I think it's time for you to get out of here."
I collected my purse, and offered him my hand as I walked out the door, and said, "Thank you for the experience." He refused to shake my hand.
So, I went to the office across the hall to say goodbye to the other office's secretary (she's really nice), and he followed me there and as I was asking for her phone number, said, "In case you haven't noticed, I'm escorting you off the premises, you need to go."
Well, I finished getting her number, held my head up high, said goodbye to both of them, and walked out.
Then I went to my dad's office to tell him what happened, and to my mom's office to tell her what happened, and after encouragement from them and their workers, filed an unemployment claim.
I've never filed an unemployment claim, and I think under normal circumstances, I wouldn't (hell, if he had just been decent about firing me, I wouldn't) - but I truly think this jerk deserves it. He made a mistake in firing me instead of letting me finish my notice period (and without a modicum of pleasantness - refusing to shake my hand was immature and just low, as was escorting me off the premises) - the last word is mine. Even if I don't receive unemployment benefits, his unemployment insurance rates will skyrocket.
Ha! Take that, Mr. C------!!!

Good luck with the unemployment claim, I'm sure some of his other employees are fed up of him too and are willing to back you up.

How it works is that an employer is required to maintain unemployment insurance. If an employer hires someone, and then after a probationary period of three months fires them, then they are entitled to enter an unemployment claim.
The claim is investigated, and the employer has to fill out forms, and has an opportunity to respond to the claim. A claims agent then goes over the details of the claim, and determines whether the claimant is eligible to receive benefits. If so, then the insurance of the employer is required to pay the claimant for 24 weeks, or until the claimant finds a new job, whichever comes first.
In many instances, claimants don't have much of a chance of actually receiving unemployment benefits, especially if they're up against one of the huge corporations (Walmart is especially evil about getting around wrongful firing, I've heard). The reason is that these corporations often have automatic written "warning" systems - if an employee is a few minutes late, they get a warning, if it happens again, they receive another warning, etc. It's virtually impossible not to get to a level of warning that would allow a company such as that to fire an employee without fear of unemployment repercussions.
However, in my case, even if I hadn't been fired in the end, I could still have filed a claim and had a slim chance of receiving benefits - I've had full time status for over three months, and my employer harrassed me. If the claims agent took witness testimony from the other lawyer's office, they could establish a pattern of abusive behavior on the part of my employer. There is a clause that allows an employee to quit and receive benefits in the case that the employer has caused undue stress, or created an unsafe working environment (such as through harrassment), therefore dissuading the employee from continuing in his or her employment.
Regardless, I've been fired, and never even received so much as a progress review (some semblance of this is required by labor law), even though my contract said I would receive a review after three months of employment. Nevermind the fact that I received no written warning regarding potential grounds for dismissal (also required to give the employee a period of time to improve in good faith). Furthermore, directly prior to any of these incidents, I received a small (and I mean tiny) Christmas bonus, and a bonus, no matter how small, is an indication of excellent work. Coupling that with the fact that he has actually commended my work habits and product to other witnesses (whether he actually meant it, or was just being two-faced), there is a strong case against him for unfair dismissal.
He may believe that as an employer, he has the right to treat his employees however he wants in his place of business, but the Fair Standards in Labor Act and Amendments pretty much negate his rights to harrass an employee for any reason, and establish that it is the employer's responsibility to provide a fair, safe, and stable working environment, or he will have to face the potential monetary and legal consequences for not doing so.
