Just got the game today, thought I was doing well for a first char, managed to kill most of the enemies I saw, couldn't make up my mind between the combat shotgun or the chaingun as both do a fair bit of damage, both have plenty of ammo readily available, kept the chaingun as my main gun of choice as I had Eagle Eye Rank 2 which means it was fairly accurate. Shotgun was back-up for enemies who get too close as it pushes them away.

Damn Hell Knights are buggers, on the level I died I had my rocket launcher out blasting a far-away one then one came out of the door I was next to and started hitting me, thankfully the hits do less damage then the acid ball but faraway Hell Knight seemed to be ignoring me as I had Cat Eye so he was out of range, pulled out my chain-gun and blasted away at the HK right next to me so he wouldn't use his acid-ball, lost half my life to him but got him in the end, then as I switch to me faithful rocket launcher far-away Hell Knight got a little bit closer and acid-balled me to death.

Not a bad game, thought it would be nice to try after ADoM and I wasn't dissapointed, got to ask a question though, those bonus-levels like Chained Court, do they only have the entrance on a level once or can they appear on any random level as long as you have not been to the bonus level? e.g. see Hell's Arena entrance on Level 2 but ignore it can I find it later? If so I didn't have much luck with this dude.

Haven't found any special weapons yet either, would be nice to have a rapid-fire combat shotgun to see what all the fuss is about.

First things first. You had a Blue Armor in your backpack, but none on you. Why? :(

As for the levels, they are locked. If you don't the level when it shows up, it won't show up later.

Other than that - really nice first character! :P

Because first Hell Knight took most of the blue armour I was already wearing, but rather then risk a turn of no-firing I decided just to keep shooting, then instead of donning a new set for Number 2 (or healing myself) I whipped out my rocket launcher, then mr knight for far-away hit me with the acid ball killing me and destroying my armour in the process, should have ran through the doorway for cover to heal and sort my weapons out but I thought I was out of range of the acid ball, ah well you die you learn.

My best char so far, first one to see hell barons, former human commandos and arachnotrons. Damn barons and arachnotrons are tough cookies, the barons seem to like blowing away my cover.

The double shotgun isn't that bad, very good at long-range with cat-eye to snipe enemies and packs the most punch at close range, crap against loads of enemies nearby. Also must learn to take multiple plasma rifles instead of just unloading existing ones, just lose 10 space for powercell but can pack a lovely overcharge which does kick *booty*.

The fast-load rocket seems ok but not so great at close range, and in this game rockets were a little bit sparse. What I really want is a fastload double shotgun, now that would be tasty. (Alternativly I want that damned BFG  :( )

Found something cool about the doubleshotgun which isn't on the doomwiki, it has a special reload where you only reload one shell, this means you can use it as a normal shotgun as well so if you are surrounded by lots of enemies you can just use the special reload as it takes less time, dunno if the special reload is quicker then a normal shotgun though. Nice to have versatility anyway, can pack a big punch and still reloads as fast as a shotgun.

Still want a fastload shotgun (or extended sounds nice as well as you should be able to fire twice without having to reload, unless it fires 3 shells at a time :( )

Not strictly on topic, but do you know you can attach character files now? I think this is another thread in which that would make sense...

Bit of a bump here, but definitely worth it - there's a new version of DoomRL available at the site, with difficulty levels, new traits and so on. No Linux version as of right now, should be up in a week or so apparently. Yay!

This is awesome - I don't know why I never tried it before despite investigating pretty much every Roguelike I came across. It forms a great triumvirate of more actionful RLs with Castlevania and Metroid.
