Let's create a whisky thread where people can share their love for this wonderful spirit. When I get my salary I'm going to buy myself a bottle of Lagavulin 16 yrs  :). It's without a doubt the tastiest whisky I've ever tasted. I generally don't like strong liquor, but I've found that whisky (single malt only) from Scotland isn't like the other liquors. In my bookcase I already have a bottle of Talisker and Laphroaig. So, how about it, anyone else share my love for whisky?  ;)

Sounds like I share MdaG's love of whisky pretty closely - big fan of an Islay single malt, the peatier the better. I'm not happy unless it's like drinking liquid soil :) There's a nice bottle of Ardbeg sitting in my kitchen that I got for my birthday, yum!

Incidentally, isn't water the water of life?

I mainly use Whiskey as an ingredient in Manhattens, which always go down well at parties.

3 parts Whiskey
1 parts Vermouth (sweet, dry or a mixture of both)
Dash Angostura Bitters
Ice

Put the ice in a cocktail glass and pour the ingredients over it.  Then add the bitters.

There's a difference between whisky and whiskey (which by european rules is the equavalent of bourbon). Bourbon will do nicely as a drink ingredient since its taste contains hints of fudge, popcorn, marsipan and stuff like that. I think pouring Ardbeg in a Manhattan will ruin the drink (not to mention all that beautiful Ardbeg). Bourbon is partly made off of corn hence the separation from the term whisky.

*edit*

Ardbeg is good too  :) I don't have my own bottle, but I sometimes order a small glass of it when I'm at the pub.

Not a huge fan of whiskey I would say :) tried to drink it straight and ick to the extreme ;)  hehe but added some water or coke I forget honestly since it was at my uncles place, and it tasted better.

There are three aqua vitaes:

- Mineral Water
- Vodka
- a Scandinavian liquor distilled from potato or grain mash flavoured with caraway seeds  known as Aquavit (basically it is a kind of vodka all the same but I'm sure some scandinavians would smite me for saying that)

From The Scotch Malt Whisky Society: The term 'whisky' derives from the Gaelic language, one of the ancient tongues of Scotland and Ireland. 'Usquebaugh', translated, means water of life.

BLASPHEMY!!!!   ;)

Calling fine akvavit vodka, bah!   :)

Jusk kidding  ;)

Actually Akvavit is really tasty, but only together with a nice meal. On its own it's really boring. Not like a nice glass of Lagavulin  ;)

A kind of vodka??? *smites Stroggy* :)

It's called gammel dansk, actually, and IMO it doesn't taste like vodka. It doesn't taste very good actually, although old people seem to be very fond of it.

I'm not really into whisky, though. Sure, if I'm offered some fine whisky, I'll taste it, and maybe even enjoy it a little, but I prefer vodka myself. And snaps.

Gammel Dansk isn't akvavit as far as I know. At least not in Sweden, here's it's classed as "Bitter/Apertif".

You're right of course, gammel dansk is a bitter, not an akvavit. They're equally obnoxious though, if you ask me. You usually drink gammel dansk in the morning, though, whenever it's somebodys birthday, making it slightly more disgusting than akvavit. I always confuse the two, though. :)
