Hey, how come Tom gets all the praise just cuz he does his silly little pixel arts?

Working with Photoshop is HARD!! Most people can't even decipher the tool panel!  





Note to those who think I'm serious: I'm just returning the favor from my very first ever encounter with Tom, in my Abandonia gallery

Anyways... here is a little treasure that few knows of.

When Cave Story was added, the text was made in another resolution than the actual screens, which made the text look like... well, like crap, to be frankly. Kosta and Kon-Tiki had tried everything they could think of in order to make the screens look good, but had given up the fight (and added the screens with the crappy "text").

When I saw those screens I decided to have a go myself. What you see below is the result. This was one of my favourite projects on AR so far, as I got to play a little detective as well. I've never played the game, and had no idea what was being said in those screens... but making one letter after the other, the scenes opened themselves. It was really fun!

(Sorry for the big file, but I wanted all the screens to show, and I didn't want to use a Image Hosting Site for these).

Pixel by pixel.


I can't use fonts
I've never found out how to best use text in MS Paint, so I re-make instead.


And with the Cave Story screens, I couldn't have done it even if I wanted to. (As you can't see what the font the originals use). I just had to use logic. All the different letters appeared the same, so when I figured out one, I added that to all the similiar dots. And with a new letter up, I could guess my way to what another letter would be. Then add that one to all the screens. Then try to decypher the next letter.

That was why I loved to remake those so much, I really had to use my brain



Example:
The following is letters from the word "Deathtrap". Alone they don't make much sense, but when you see some of those letters next to eachother, you get an idea of some letters they might be. For instance the "e" - the "e" would always be two lines making a corner. So I just swapped all the "corners" with my remade "e", then looked over all the screens with the new letter attached, trying to spot another letter that would suddenly make sense. And then it was just reapeting the same steps over and over.

In the end I had made a translation of the screens using code templates, such as the one below

Nah, I just tied him up ina secret underground facility and forced him to tell me how to make such wonderful art. Hey Tom, did you make a abandonia guy for each rating point like 1.1, then another guy for 1.2 or what??

No. That would be too much work. They blend into eachother. Just take a look at the site, and you'll see. 4.8 = same icon as 5.0
