First reports of the lethal-to-people kind of bird flu in the UK. Oh dear.

It's breaking news on Sky News, so I can't give you much info, sorry. Anyway, I recommend staying warm and inside and stuff. So that you don't die and things, obviously.

They found traces of the bird-flu in Sweden as well, but of the kind that isn't lethal to humans.

It's very bad. I hope it will stay where it's now.

It was in quarantine, though, so I think the apocalypse is a couple of weeks off yet. Then again, I feel like crap, so maybe I'm spreading it around right now.

It's so nice to be planning a trip to Europe during the outbreak of the first plague-like epidemic in centuries :P

Right on the tail of being in the path of the most unpredictable hurricane with the lowest barometric pressure in recorded history...

I doubt you were being serious there, but it's worth pointing out that it's not plague-like, it's not an epidemic and the last one was in 1918 (with a mutant flu strain). The avian flu as it exists is incapable of infecting humans except in cases of highly prolonged contact, normally in rather unsanitary conditions. The potential pandemic would result if the virus mutates or crosses with a human-carried pathogen like influenza. In any case there's not a lot you can do about it other than bemoaning the west's drug patenting laws. Unless you're a bird - then you can feel free to panic.

Hmm... possibly, but the type of bird flu seen is actually the fatal stuff. Which is tragic.

Also, it's not an epidemic, it's more likely to be a pandemic and they're much, much worse.

Anyway, yes it was in quarantine, but I'm still displeased.

Oh and also it's probably going to spread around the world and a conservative deathstimate is about 150million people.

Anyway, you Americans have a few weeks to keep yourselves warm etc. and indeed get your guns out and start picking off the 'avian menace' as I'm sure the Daily Mail will start calling it. I reckon that they'll also want the global culling of every bird, ever. But they're a right load of wankers, eh?

Sorry. I didn't mean it as a flame, I meant it as a bit of a joke.

And the Daily Mail is a UK newspaper, so don't accuse me of USA-bashing either please.

Not that you would, I just imagine that some people will hold it against me for some reason or another.

Avian Menace, eh? I'm sure somebody will also come up with "Fowl Play". Or as long as there's only birds dying, "Bye-bye, Birdies"...

You could be onto something. Or something about the government 'playing chicken' when they don't know how to stop the virus spreading etc.

I don't know what'll be worse, the death toll or the predictable headlines.
