Yes, the nerd in me just wanted to open this thread. I know there's at least one math lover out there! So what are your opinion about math, some hate it others love it. Me? To me it's an invaluable tool for solving problems and creating tech for my future employers.

Maybe, the important thing is that you appreciate the wonder that is Complex analysis. I hereby define Complex analysis as a very important area!  :)

Isn't this beautiful? (Fourier transform)

This is almost as beautiful (Fourier series)

Actually, I decided to join the maths society this term. To broaden my mind and all that. Some of their talks are quite fascinating, but of course some of it just goes straight over my head. Luckily I've got a friend who does maths, though, so I can always pester her to explain things to me if necessary...:)

I like the equation "e to the minus 2 pi i = 1" (I think that's right) - so many fundamental symbols, such an elegant fact.

Maths cats potloodgat. The basics're useful, but all that junk 'bout integrals and differentials're useless beyond measurement.

Tiki no liky maths. Maths costed Tiki's academic IT carreer. Damn uptight uni people, and damn uptight maths.

DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

ughh I hate Math. Maximum/Minimum Derivate Applications are the devil incarnate!

I'm taking Intermediate Calculus right now and despite the fact that I'm doing really well its still annyoing the hell outta me. :)

e^(i*pi) = -1 or e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0

which we can show is true if we use Euler's formula which claims that

e^(i*a) = cos(a) + i*sin(a)

Yeah, it's pretty  :)

:bye: Yeah, I had trouble in the beginning too. Now it's invaluable to me. I'm currently taking classes where I'm using a lot of signal processing. MdaG no do those things without pretty Calculus.

that's the one - knew it was something like that.
All this maths talk is reminding me that I'm supposed to be reading up on Souslin's Problem for my project. Grrr.

That's not true I'm afraid - the reason people get turned off calculus is mainly due to lazy teaching; integration isn't about measuring the area under a graph, that's a fringe use for it. Try doing any physics without it and you'll get nowhere - it's essential for fluid dynamics, electromagnetism (in the form of vector calculus), relativity and particularly in quantum mechanics, to name but a few areas.
