I am new to Dosbox.  I have gotten a couple games to work so I know the basics, but I am having trouble with a game called PIRATES!  I cannot seem to get past the sign up stages of the game, and the 1st dual. After that the game locks.  If you'd like to try it for yourself it can be dl here:
http://www.80sdos.com/pirates.php
I am NOT plugging the site. I know the rules.  Just asking for help in getting it running.  Specifially are there specific CPU cycles and frames settings to use for the game?  Any other suggestions?

Runing Vista 32-bit, dual core AMD, 3 GB RAM.

Thanks
Med

Use the Left arrow keys to attack.  (Up and Left) (left) (down and Left)  3 choices to attack at different levels.  opposite to parry and reteat backwards.

Run "loadfix" before running the game. What Russ says it's true but those are the default settings so you don't have to worry about tweaking them.

so you are saying in the dos prompt it should look like this:
c:/PIRATES!>loadfix

Is that correct?  What am i looking for?  what does that do?  I havent read about this.

thx

nevermind it fixed it.  because now it gave the option for 1 or 2 discs.  I guess the default was 2 and it was looking for the other drive to load the game.

now it works.  thanks!!

I think the game may still crash randomly if you don't use loadfix (just happened to me). And yes the "64kb were allocated" is what you want.

dosbox.conf said:

auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate
I think for real mode games (v.g. Pirates!) it equals normal and for protected mode ones dynamic.

There are many ways you can do things... If you start the game from the command line, you can for example create a new text file called "pirates.bat" (the .bat extension is important) and write in it:

loadfix
pir
loadfix -d

The you could start the game by writing "pirates" instead of "pir".
