Huh? Didnt know americans even learnt foreign languages.
It's "Americans".

And actually, they mostly learn French (or so I am told) and Spanish, but a few of them learn German (it seems).

Indeed the typical "stereotype" creeps up again, what a surprise. Well here in Canada, actually quite a bit of languages can  be learned from as early as primary school grades 1-6, from the obvious like French, to german, spanish, japanese, to even here there's a big Cantonese following. Plus I think next year or year after it's going to be mandatory for children who enter grade 7 to take a second language.

In addition to "must-learn" languages (Finnish, Swedish & English) we have options at elementary school to read for at least French, German, Russian, Italy and Spanish, but at higher levels of education there are a lot more to read. Me: Finnish excellent, English good, Swedish poor, French... well, I used to read it two years in elementary, so none   )
...70 years... LOL

Yeah, Chinese would be nice in our school too, but it's a bit unlikey, sadly.

That and Russian.

Well just something I noticed. Isn't it funny how this topic is named foreign languages when this forum is international

DakaSha:if you go into a kindergarden and give all the kids rubber schlongs they will prob just hit each other over the head with them
DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

True, but every language is foreign to at least one person on these forums, no?

For example, I actually communicate by Semaphore, English is my second language (which explains my poor grammar).

Yes, but "foreignness" is a relative concept, and this topic is about learning languages which aren't your first language, right? How else would you call that?

I'd love to learn a whole bunch of new languages (including Icelandic, Finnish, Russian, Hungarian, Armenian and Ancient Greek, in no particular order), but I highly doubt I'll ever have time for that, which is a bit of a shame.:roflol:

I'd say that Latin is perhaps one of the most useful languages in that it's great for language learning in general. It helps you to get a sense of the structure of language (especially because the emphasis isn't so much on speaking it), which can then be applied to other languages.

@Piggy: Can you still speak it? Wow.
