I wondered too but was afraid to admit my ignorance - is that when you post adverts for another site?

Trolling is when you make controversial comments for the sole intent of agitating people.

Basically, it's just picking fights. :)

Like the troll under the bridge? So what you're saying is we're not to pick fights with billy goats? But that's basically all I do!

Yeah like trying to flame people for no particular reason or attacking an opinion and such, just play it cool.

Just don't tick people off too much and too often, and you should be in the clear. It's mainly for the sake of promoting a community environment, rather than a hellish flame-fest.

Common sense and courtesy: make it your mantra.  :)

typical about forum trolls is that they are also nagging about everything.  Not a breed you want on your forums... :)

And they might seem innocent at first, their victim being seen as the flamer, but them actually having incited it.

Trolling is posting in the only purpose to pick on someone and try to get the picked upon member to reply to your post which would result in an increasing amount of heated reply and, ultimatly, to a post war. This is exactly the same thing as spam but it is extremely more subtle.

I myself used that expression on the original Abandonia board when 2 members began to pick on me for what seemed to me no reasons at all in a heated discussion. When I noticed that they would never stop I simply dropped the discussion. This is never something pleasant tough because, especially in my own example, I was looking like the bad guy to some new members afterward when in fact I was right. When I tryied to defend myself VS the new members then the other members noticed and wanted to start again...

It's a very unhealthy cycle which can't lead to something good. Just don't do it...  :)

Only in so fair as... no. No you cannot. Then you'd just be increasing your post count for nothing.

And as I said once 'That is bad and wrong'.
