Two questions:
1) How do you select inventory items (to drink coffee, for example)? The inventory screen shows on the side of the screen that ESC is for leaving, ENTER for info, and some unidentified (mac?) key for selection.
2) Where is the subcaptain/village chief? I looked everywhere in the village.

To select items believe it is either the ctrl key or the space bar that will allow you to use items and such.

Think he is in one of the biggest buildings in the village, that's where you should look, if memory serves me right.

There are only 5 inventory items that you can "use," and if you're still in the first village, you should only have one of them. Coffee you find in the field, or pay for at a vending machine is used automatically. None of the items you can use are used through the inventory menu - that's just to get descriptions of what you've got.
bit of a spoiler said:
The sword is the only item you should be able to use at this point, and you press the space bar to swing it. You can store coffee to drink, but you won't be able to until later in the game.
The village chief is hanging out in the big building at the northeast corner of the village, on the platform in the middle of the room. He's wearing yellow.

So, I've tried to play this game a few times already (operative word:"Tried"). I am running vista on a dual core laptop, with all the latest upgrades, etc.
The game will run, but very, very, unplayably slow. I don't have a problem in smaller, one-screen rooms, but anything larger than that is terrible--esp. the outdoor villiage area.
My screen does not support 640x480 resolution, so, while in fullscreen mode, the program will run in a small window in the center of the screen, while the rest of the screen is black.
I've also noticed that a little notification window opens when I enter a new area, with the name of said area on it. however, the window is only visible after I exit the program (usually using alt+tab to try and fix the problem), not during gameplay.
So, does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just going to have to find a new game to play?

Maybe try playing through DosBox - http://www.reloaded....ty.php?UtilID=1 ?
Dunno if this will help, but it can't hurt to try.
