You fought to gain control of different systems, there were all the familiar characters, including Luke, Leia, Han, Vader etc, plus many many more. You could play both sides... Damn I can't remember what its name was. Can anyone help?

Empire At War has apparently lots of similar elements, but I believe it is significantly older... Thanks anyways, I might even try Empire At War.
You might try Star Wars: Rebellion (or Supremacy). It has this huge galactic map in the main screen, you can play either as the Empire or the Rebellion, and your task is to conquer the whole galaxy. either through brute force (empire) or diplomacy.
The game had enormous potential, but I found the controls and interface much to cumbersome for smooth play, especially with the HUGE amount of micromanagement involved, but it has great depth. You can send your special units (Han, Leia, Luke etc.) on special missions, there's a fantastic 3D-space battle engine hidden somewhere underneath all the statistics... It feels a little like a precursor to Master Of Orion 3 *grin*
Edit: Made by Lucasarts in 1997. Check this:

That's it! Thanks, man! I know it was criticized, but I always wanted to try it. Now I just have to find it somewhere. Anyways, thanks a lot! Does anyone have experience with Empire At War? Now as I got what I wanted, why not keep this open for SW strategy games?
...70 years... LOL
