I just thought I'd have to mention Zangband (and the other Angband variants) here, for they are amazing in their addictive, unforgiving simplicity. I personally play Zangband TK from time to time (although Mordor has currently taken over) - it was featured in PC Gamer UK last year sometime, and the only place I found to download the (now discontinued) TK version (with the user-friendly interface and graphical fixes, but unfortunately no longer being worked on, so later versions of Zangband have more features) was from HotU (although I could upload the archive I have on DVD, which in fact appears to be the same one, since they've left an irritating character in there. Grrr.)

Zangband itself introduces into the Tolkien-based Angband elements of the Amber series of novels - there are other variants like Cthangband (Lovecraftian) and a Pern version (Ann McCaffrey) available.

I actually prefer IVAN. Nice GUI and well laid out. Just a real joy to play.

Please add this to the site guys http://ivan.sourceforge.net/index.html

ZangbandTk is god in the form of a very basic RPG. I like... a lot!

Oh, it will reduce grown men to tears due to its harsh difficulty. But that's their fault for being weak. It's just brutally fair.

I love having a list of about 10 characters with names like BillyBob VII and so on - and then just when you think you're getting the hang of it you get too cocky and WHAM! dead again. And yet you keep coming back for more punishment because it was your fault you died. Fine fine game.

For all things *band, try

http://www.thangorodrim.net/

If you like your roguelikes really harsh, try
(Linley's) Dungeon Crawl, to be found at: http://www.dungeoncrawl.org/

Furthermore, a good place to stay is the usenet group rec.games.roguelike.misc, if you want to be in on what's happening in the text-only scene :-) Google Groups carries it, as well as http://www.roguelikedevelopment.org/ (although read-only, afaik)

Finally there's that up-and coming Roguelike WIKI RogueBasin
http://roguebasin.t-...x.php/Main_Page which is just getting off the floor but has already some interesting articles.

Oh, and for a real treat go and google up DiabloRL or Diablo 7drl :-) From the same guy that made DoomRL :-)
Aw crap, I'm bloggified!

*bump*

Since everyone seems to be discussing roguelikes ATM (Lost Labyrinth, ADOM etc) I thought I'd bump this one.

I'm gonna write a review and do an update for the TK variants once I've finished my exams.

There's a steampunk variant of (http://encyclopedia....y.com/Steampunk if you have no clue what I'm talking about) Angband called Steamband that I tried a few months ago, and found to be a real treat. It was raw, yes, but steampunk is one of my favourite genres, and the potential there is quite astonishing. I really hope it's still being updated, but I have a sad feeling it's not.

Yeah, I realised that myself. I'll change it.

That last post was a bit spammy Aureliano.

I think I remember hearing about a Discworld version of Angband... I'll have to see if I can find it again.

This is probably an excessively stupid question, but where might I find this ZangbandTK thingy? My computer doesn't seem to like the download at the Underdogs for some reason...Posted Image
