I remembered reading an article about this freeware game in a year and a half old issue of a Danish games magazine (the creator is Danish, so it figures they'd do a story about it sooner or later). I recently dug up the magazine and read the article again, and I found a topic dedicated to it on the AGS forums.

Quote

While acquiring some rare prints from the estate of a deceased collector, film archivist Dinah Burroughs stumbles upon a disturbing but strangely hypnotic silent film by Conrad Gray, a long forgotten director of the 1930's and 40's. What begins as a routine assignment becomes a waking nightmare in the city of dreams, as Dinah?s obsessive research into the film and the fate of its enigmatic creator brings her deep inside the dark mirror image of Hollywood?s glamour and glitz.

The mystery soon engulfs her, turning Los Angeles into a paranoid twilight world of sunshine and noir, where seeing is no longer believing. A mirage of false memories, where the border between authentic and imaginary is disintegrating, forcing Dinah to question her eyes, her mind, and the medium of film itself.

The gameplay takes the form of investigation, research, and interviews, as you move through dilapidated Sunset Boulevard mansions, tomb-like studio vaults, dusty newspaper archives, and a rundown Hollywood hotel, its former glory long gone. The puzzles will be firmly embedded in the plot: Scrutinize clips from Gray?s movies on the editing table and analyze film stills with computer aid. Gain access to the director?s personal notes in the library?s restricted collection, and track down his few still living co-workers, to expose two terrifying secrets; one fifty years old, another spanning centuries.

Game Features
?  Full length mystery adventure in the Gabriel Knight tradition
?  Well researched storyline blends fact and fiction, weaving threads of film history, philosophy, and esoteric religion into a rich tapestry of horror and suspense.
?  A cast of 15 highly developed characters to interview and befriend, to suspect and seduce.
?  More than 30 locations to explore in a contemporary, real world Los Angeles as strange and magical as any fantasy or sci-fi setting.
?  Unique visual style employing the rough look of set design and costume sketches.
?  Original approach to sound and music inspired by the audio design of David Lynch.

Technical features
?  Hi-color backgrounds in 640x480 resolution.
?  Fully animated characters with hand-drawn dialog close-ups.
?  Custom GUI similar to the expanded Sierra interface of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers.
?  Digital music and ambience tracks.

Scheduled release dates: Demo, winter 2004. Full game, fall 2005.

It's looking really, really good, with amazing graphics and what promises to be great gameplay. The last update is from may 21. 2005, where he says it should be out "Winter 2005/2006". I have no idea if that's realistic, but I guess we'll see. At least it means that it's being worked on.
Furthermore, it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed.

I don't remember ever hearing about this project before now. Any chance you could scan in the preview from the magazine for us to take a look at?

Sorry, but I don't have a scanner. It wouldn't help you much if I did, though, since it's in Danish (unless you're Danish, of course). But to tell you the truth it isn't much of a preview, it's more of an article explaining how to go about creating your own game, written by the creator of Shadowplay.

However, last month he said that he was hoping to have a demo out sometime in may. That obviously hasn't happened, but with a bit of luck a demo could be coming out pretty soon.

I gotta say that I'm very excited about this project. Judging from the preliminary screenshots and from what he's revealed about the game so far, it might as well be a commercial adventure game. Only it's free. :)

*bump*

New screenshots available. Click here and scroll down to see them. They look really good, but as the guy says they're mostly to show off the interface and the backgrounds aren't finished.

*bump* (again)

After getting a slap on the wrist for reviving the Shadowplay thread on the AGS boards, I managed to wrest some more information from GarageGothic (the guy who's making the game). Basically, what he's saying is that, although real life has been interfering heavily with the production of Shadowplay, he's now  more motivated than ever to continue and finish the game.

Also, he has been requesting features for the AGS engine, and quite a few of them have been implemented in the latest beta. Mainly, there is now a dynamic shadows feature, which will be implemented in the game. He has made a couple of test screenies to showcase the feature:

He says he'll release the tech demo as soon as he gets a few glitches ironed out.
