Clue: I share my first name with a character from a famous Shakespeare play.

If it's not Horatio Nelson, then it should be.

EDIT:  Just saw that you gave away that answer in another thread.  D'oh!

It was the Shakespeare clue that gave it away.

OK, my turn:  I was an inventor whose best-known invention wasn't produced until some nine years after it was patented.  It's neither a hand grenade nor a spice grinder, but it played a significant role in keeping me alive in one of the worst places on earth.

Penicillin?

Edit: HOW STUPID CAN I BE? Of course the inventor, not the invention, so: Alexander Fleming?

Nope, not as well-known as Fleming, and the invention is certainly not as well-known as penicillin.  I'll give another clue later today if nobody guesses it before then.

It's been a little over 24 hours, so here's another clue:

The name of my best-known invention (really the only one I was known for) is the feminine form of my first name.

Heh heh, not my first name, the inventor's first name!  :ok:  Any clues given in first person refer to the inventor, not me.  And yes, of course Fruit Pie Jones is my real name!  I thought we were all using our real names here!

Another clue:  For many years, my invention was much loved by rally racers for its durability and ease of use.

Hehe.  No, he invented suspension for motor vehicles.   :D
It was Frui Pie's comment about rally racers that made me think of that, but apparantly it's wrong.   :ok:
