I don't know about Transcendence, but I spent quite a bit of time playing the remake of Anacreon, a while back, and it's excellent. It's definitely up to the standards of AR, IMO. However, when I was playing it (about a year ago, I think) he was still working on it, and I think (hope) he still is. Some features from the original were missing back then, and as far as I can see, they still are.
It's still great, though. I definitely recommend it for all the 4x enthusiasts out there.

Anacreon is an old interplanatery empire strategy game that was really good and yet didn't do very well; the game is similar to Master of Orion in several ways, though you can play scenarios that have set turn limits and have varying degrees of difficulty. There is a group that made a Windows version of the game complete with updated graphics and internet play.

Transcendency is a non-linear space exploration game where you control a space ship and shoot pirates and pirate space stations. You can loot the wrecks of anything you kill and sell what you find to get money to buy upgrades for your ship. The game is played on two axes, and currently doesn't have a story or any further point in playing (as far as I can tell).
