Ok, let's settle this fast and effectively :

I'm sorry that my joke was maybe too offensive, you're sorry for taking it too seriously. End of the story, back to ze topic.

Oh man...

Ok folks sorry for that. Should have known that everything I say, especially when it's over-exagerated and in obvious contradiction with what I've previously said, is taken seriously. Calm down, pickle.

Actually, I don't know if I'll stick to gamemaker for very long. I have a number of reason to turn toward a system with less simplification but more control.

Firstly, I think I'd like to work on 640x480 for a later project, and that means those kind of software is out of question.
Secondly, I'd want the game to be playable in fullscreen, and I don't know if this utility has a way to do so.
And last but not least, I enjoy making things with as little interface as possible (like wordpad for webpages). I guess I just like to know exactly what I'm doing. Having to guess what sort of shortcut the program is using is an unecessary headache, at least when I don't have a clear idea on how the whole mess works. I'd rather have simplified features than having to let my program do everything on it's own.

Is there an alternative to C++ for creating those kind of games, that let me do things on my own for the most part ?

Ooooooh, sure, let's get back to the seventies, shall we. Let's not be able to defend our houses against what lurks behind our fences, because actually it doesn't matter, I'm sure all the terrorists hiding in the bushes are just waiting for us to hold hands under the glorious glow of a morning rainbow.

This kind of talk will make our world fall apart by allowing filthy hordes of metrosexual hippies to barge into our houses and perform their hideous and unspeakable rituals before our kids, effectively teaching them that being a wimp is a good thing. Next, they'll probably make them like their emo crap and filthy punk-wannabee music. They will live sheltered lives for a while thanks to the sacrifice of our soldiers, unaware of the dangers that lurks beyond our borders. It will be a matter of years before our nation decay beyond repair, leaving international muslim-communists to bomb our towers with european planes, steal our women and leave the lifeless bodies of our homo children to rot under the cruel rays of the sun.

I hope you're happy, you just allowed the terrorists to win by promoting an inadequate social model. Thanks a lot, traitor !

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW YOU WORTHLESS BEING

I'm a master of motion, as well as an attention *mary magdalene*.

EDIT : Oh yeah, forgot. Left and right to move, space bar to jump. Enjoy.
EDIT 2 : Making this little jumpy sound was more trouble than I thought, but it was stimulating enough. My actual problem is the fact that his ears, pants and bonnet get stuck on the edges of the block. If anyone has a clue on a way to avoid that, please do tell (I already tried to enlarge the borders of the sprite, but since it's background is transparent it doesn't change a thing).

Gameplay (more) :

In this first installment, or should I say introduction, our midget friend will be opposed to a limited kind of opponents.

The story begins very simply : Jeremy, an infantry soldier in the middle of a war he doesn't even understand, decides to save his hide by fleeing as far from the battlefield as he can. Little does he know, it'll be a very long trip...

As far as ennemies go, There will be several types of soldiers, armed with several different types of weapons (I have six in mind, there will be more if need be). The places the player will visit range from torn apart no man's land to deep forests and shattered cities, ancient subtarennaean ruins (optional) and two different types of soldier's settlements.

Jeremy will start the game armed with a very primitive rifle, which he will soon trade for an automatic pistol. Along the road he'll find several weapons which vary in rate of fire and maiming power. I plan to make 3 of them, not counting the first rifle and the pistol. Maybe four if need be.

While being ridiculously short, Jeremy has vastly superior physical abilities than his comrades and ennemies. He runs faster and jumps higher, and can dodge bullets with surprising ease (well, if the player can jump inbetween them, that is...).

That's it for now.

I'll also use this thread to talk about my game in more extensive details. This will be an additional incentive to keep a regular pace of work.

Graphics :

I really don't plan to overdo on graphics, not on my first try at least. Let's face it, I'm not the sharpest tool in the box, and I won't get anything nearly decent done (let's say Snes quality) before maybe early 2006, or so it seems. I will try to keep the sprites simple but efficient, just enough so that it won't be too repulsing.

Of course that won't be much of a problem if I eventually find someone to do it for me, but this is unlikely for the moment. Firstly because I am still a wanabee, and no self-respecting artist would waste it's undoubtely valuable time on someone who has not yet proved it's dedication to it's cause. Secondly, because despite my obvious lack of graphical capacities, I still want to do it myself if I can. I'm the kind of person who have to be in control of everything. And thirdly because, from my personnal experience, "artists" are the laziest persons on earth and you can consider yourself lucky if you get even half a tile per month !

Sound :

This is much more of a problem than graphics, since this is a domain in which I have absolutely no experience, and that is crucial to the game overall. Saddly enough, I will have to snatch some midis here and there, whether I like it or not. I simply cannot do everything on my own.

Gameplay :

Ah, the core of it all, eh ? Well, the game will be an arcade 2D game, a la everything from Mario to Ghouls'n Ghosts, Sonic, Megaman...you name it. I don't want to try anything too complicated on my first try (although it will not be void of personal touches - but for that you'll have to wait and see), and so I have decided to make it a tribute to all those games that I played and loved. No type of game manages to please me like arcade games do, and I want to share this feeling.

So, what will be the features of this game ? Well, nothing too fancy. Multiple weapons balanced for each situation, charge shot, maybe some equipment that allow easier exploring.

The first game will be rather short (no more than an hour or two of gameplay, at most). The goal here is to try and duplicate as faithfully as possible what I've seen and loved, adding a personnal plot and characters dear to my heart. If it goes well, I'll get into more complicated things.

*yawns* that's it for tonight. More later.

It seems so.

God, anything under 32x32 is fine, but when it gets to bigger stuff the awfulness just shows too much. Do you give lessons, Mr. Henrik ? What little progresses I can make on my own will not make the backgrounds or bosses done so I have to find a way to sharpen up my learning curve.

Well, if it's masculinity you're aiming for, swearwords aren't actually required. A man that can make a sentence delicate and subtle enough is man enough for me, verbally speaking. Actually, swearing can be counterproductive since a lot of people use it as a screen to cover inner insecurities.

Heavy metal, well... actually, people who think the music you listen defines your personnality are wrong in most of their interpretations. Some stereotypes do exist, yes, however, I have found some remarcable examples of manly men listening to The Beatles, or even worse, The Who. So there is no way to draw a definite portrait on there neither.

Sexual skills are best infered than outright told : that would be just vulgar. And a manly man is never vulgar : he's classy.

Good fights are the ones in which you fight without hatreed, and without putting your ego at stake. Good fights are just like sport practice, except you get injured more often. Big deal.

Allright, so I was babbling nonsense. I would have no desire for the type of girl I described. Actually, the only quality I like to see in a girl is self-respect, which makes the whole person shine in some indescriptible light (granted she's not TOO awful looking, of course - there are damages nothing can fix). But it may not be the same kind of self respect we're talking about , so I would not jump on conclusions if I were you Tai :)

PS : this is the kind of posts that makes me wish English was my native language. Need more adjectives !

I just can sense the "...and please choke on it."

Actually, I misinterpreted. I thought we were talking about the site as a whole, and you were talking about this particular piece. There are things I find amusing on it because of this abusive use of verbal violence : it fits especially well on certain subjects.

I was imagining a breed of women who would swear without remorse, listen to heavy metal and enjoy it for the melody, boast about their sexual skills and do not mind a good fight when the opportunity present itself. Would be like a man with a woman's body, which is the closer to homosexuality I'll ever get.

Relationship with females is not a subject I am particularly passionate about, so I don't have much interest in anything that makes fun of it. Guess I'm a natural (or just uninterested, which is the same if you think hard about it while wacking yourself on the head with a steel sausage).

Nevertheless, I prefer SomethingAwful. More polished, you might say.

Was browsing my disk for some ancient doodles, and found nothing. I had to load an image from a prehistoric devart account. The pic is probably more than 3 years old (lame excuse for incoming lameness).

Anyway, here's Jere in his full glory.

Ok, having been all excited by Doukutsu Monogatori, and by the prospect of being able to do my own games, I decided to give it a shot. Since I always enjoy original work better than overused default images, and that I don't have any visual artist that will obey my every whims and swings, I decided to give it a shot myself.

I bring to you...

...Dang, it's so lame. Oh well, it's a first shot.

I will continually post what visual crap I come up every now and then so that you all can point and laugh at me. Enjoy !

That's called "jesting", Tulac. If you've ever heard about Something Awful you should know what this is. When people speak or write like that they don't mean half of what they say. It's just a cheap way to bring out a laughter using overly simplified logic, rampant vulgarity and sometimes even blatant lies. The reason it seems more true to some people is that it brings out the darker and unexpressed side of each and everyone of us. Those who seriously agree with those kind of jokes are assholes who do not deserve any kind of freedom because if there wasn't a moral system they would probably be rampaging around in vast groups, killing and raping indiscriminately.

Hehe, still funny after a hard day tho.

#1587 Doukutsu Monogatari - Cave Story

Posted by Aureliano on 11 May 2005 - 11:20 PM in Games on Reloaded

The statue room is (I think) just to show that the story is just a repetition of past events. I never was able to do anything meaningfull in there, and I have no clue who this clay figure is supposed to be.

The pipes at the bottom of the plantation serve the purpose of getting out of the water. Again, I don't know for sure, but I'm quite certain.

Don't worry about that weapon upgrade, the machinegun is plain cool on it's own. It plays a lot differently, of course...but it's a very reliable weapon.
